The Seattle Public Library Foundation is pleased to announce the 11th year of the Stimson Bullitt Civic Courage Scholarship. Individuals who, at the time of entry, live, work, or attend school in Seattle are invited to participate.
Stimson Bullitt was a lawyer, decorated soldier, outdoorsman, civil rights activist, developer, philanthropist, broadcaster, environmentalist, and community leader. He believed that courageous civic leadership could improve the lives of people in our community both now and in the future. The Stimson Bullitt Civic Courage Scholarship Competition is designed to engage students in consideration of the idea of civic courage by writing an essay of between 1,500 and 2,000 words about an individual or group of individuals in Washington State who demonstrated civic courage on an issue of importance to the community.
Essay Topic:
Describe and analyze an act of civic courage by an individual or identifiable group of individuals in Washington State. Address the following questions: why this act constituted civic courage, how this act impacted our community, region or state, and the personal, political, or professional risks associated with this action.
